Beyond the Browser: The Rise, Fall, and Legacy of the RIA Application Framework

In the early 2000s, the web was largely a collection of static documents linked together by hypertext. Clicking a link meant staring at a white screen for a few seconds while a new page loaded from a server. Data entry required page refreshes, and complex interactions—like drag-and-drop or real-time charting—were virtually impossible without clunky browser plugins or agonizing JavaScript workarounds.

Then came the Rich Internet Application (RIA) revolution.

RIAs promised the best of both worlds: the rich, responsive, desktop-like user experience of native software combined with the global reach and zero-installation deployment of the web. At the heart of this movement was the RIA application framework—a specialized suite of tools, runtimes, and component libraries that allowed developers to build fluid, high-performance applications inside a browser window.
