Before he became internationally celebrated as the “Son of Netflix” and a powerhouse of romantic and thrilling K-dramas, Song Kang was a quiet, unassuming kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea. Long before red carpets, global fan meetings, and starring roles in hits like Sweet Home and Nevertheless, his early years were quietly shaped by a unique blend of athleticism, artistic influence, and a surprisingly ordinary upbringing.
A Household of Athletes and Artists
Born on April 23, 1994, Song grew up in a household where physical discipline and creative expression sat side by side. Athletics ran deep in his family lineage: both his father and grandfather were professional athletes, with his father notably working as an artistic gymnast. Growing up surrounded by that level of physical prowess meant sports were a natural part of his early environment, though Song often noted that he didn’t quite inherit the competitive drive required to follow in his father’s footsteps as a professional athlete.
On the other side of the creative spectrum, his mother worked as a piano teacher. This gave Song an early introduction to music. Under his mother’s guidance, he began playing the piano at a young age and even won several awards at local elementary school competitions. Though he briefly stepped away from the instrument after practicing it somewhat forcefully as a child, that foundational training later came full circle when he had to pick it back up for on-screen roles.
Growing Up with a Close-knit Family
Song grew up alongside a younger brother, born in 1998, with whom he maintained a typical sibling dynamic. Though childhood photos released later by his agency revealed glimpses of their close bond, Song was generally a private kid who preferred a quiet lifestyle over the limelight.
During his school years—attending Changhyun High School and later majoring in Film Arts at Konkuk University—he wasn’t immediately dead-set on acting. In fact, like many young adults trying to figure out their path, he floated through various interests. He enjoyed simple pleasures, spent time playing video games, and maintained a tight circle of friends.
The Spark of Inspiration and Re-evaluating the Future
As a young man, Song’s striking visual appeal naturally caught the attention of talent scouts. He received multiple casting offers to train as a K-pop idol, a route that many young actors take in South Korea. However, he turned them down because his heart wasn’t in singing or dancing on stage—he realized he wanted something with emotional depth.
The turning point came when he watched films that deeply moved him, awakening a fascination with storytelling and character transformation. That spark led him to pursue formal acting studies, eventually paving the way for his debut in 2017.
Looking back at his childhood, the traits that define Song Kang today—his physical discipline, appreciation for quiet, moody weather, and latent artistic talents—all trace back to the gymnasium floors, piano benches, and peaceful neighborhoods of his youth in Suwon.
