The short answer is no, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti is not currently an IAS officer, though he did clear the prestigious civil services examination and briefly served as a government bureaucrat.
Today, he is widely recognized as one of India’s most prominent educators, authors, and the founder and managing director of Drishti IAS, a premier coaching institute for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirants based in New Delhi.
Clearing the UPSC Exam and Brief Civil Service Tenure
Born in Bhiwani, Haryana, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti pursued extensive higher education at Delhi University, earning degrees across various disciplines including history, commerce, law, and multiple advanced degrees—culminating in an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature.
In 1996, at the age of 23, he cleared the rigorous UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 384. Following his success, he joined the Central Secretariat Service under the Government of India, serving as a section officer in the Department of Official Language within the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Shift from Bureaucracy to Teaching
Despite securing a coveted government position, Dr. Divyakirti realized that his true calling lay in academia and mentoring rather than government administration. Finding the bureaucratic pace and red tape restrictive, he chose to resign from his position after a brief tenure of less than a year.
He briefly returned to teaching as an assistant professor at Delhi University before establishing Drishti IAS in November 1999 in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. His vision was to mentor students preparing for India’s toughest competitive examination by emphasizing conceptual clarity, social awareness, and critical thinking.
Cultural Impact and Present Status
Over the last two decades, Dr. Divyakirti has grown into a household name among millions of UPSC aspirants across India. Through his coaching institute, active digital presence, and widely viewed educational videos, he has helped shape the careers of countless civil servants.
His influence extended to mainstream cinema when he appeared as himself in the critically acclaimed 2023 biographical drama film 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, further cementing his status as a cultural icon in Indian education. While he is frequently referred to as an “ex-civil servant” or a former bureaucrat, he is not an active IAS officer.
