How to Add Custom Songs to Spotify: The Complete Guide
Have you ever wanted to listen to an unreleased track, a rare mixtape, a custom mashup, or your own self-produced music right alongside your favorite mainstream hits on Spotify?
While Spotify is predominantly a streaming library filled with millions of commercially licensed tracks, it features a built-in Local Files feature. This allows you to bridge the gap and seamlessly play your own audio files through the Spotify app.
Step 1: Prepare Your Music Files
Before diving into Spotify settings, ensure your audio files are ready:
- Supported Formats: Spotify primarily supports standard audio formats like MP3, M4A, and MP4 (though MP3 is generally the most reliable and trouble-free format). Formats like FLAC or WAV may not always display directly without conversion.
- Organize Your Library: Move all the custom songs you want to add into a dedicated folder on your computer (for example, a folder named “Spotify Custom Songs” inside your Music directory). This keeps things tidy and prevents files from accidentally getting deleted or moved later.
Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop (PC or Mac)
The Spotify desktop application is the master control center for adding local files.
- Open the Spotify desktop app and click on your profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings (or use
Ctrl + ,on Windows /Cmd + ,on Mac). - Scroll down until you find the Local Files section.
- Toggle on the switch that says Show Local Files.
- Under “Show songs from,” click Add a source.
- Navigate to and select the dedicated folder where you stored your custom audio files in Step 1.
Your custom tracks are now imported into your Spotify ecosystem. To find them, look at the left sidebar of your desktop app, click on Your Library, and open the Local Files folder/playlist.
Step 3: Add Custom Songs to Playlists
To listen to your custom songs easily or group them with other tracks:
- Go to your Local Files folder within Spotify.
- Right-click any of your custom tracks.
- Select Add to playlist and either choose an existing playlist or create a brand-new one specifically for your custom music.
Step 4: Sync Custom Songs to Your Phone (iOS & Android)
Because of mobile operating system restrictions, you cannot directly upload files from your phone’s storage straight into the mobile Spotify app. However, you can easily sync them from your computer:
- Make sure your computer and your mobile phone are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Spotify app on your phone and ensure Local Audio Files are enabled in your mobile app settings (under Settings and privacy > Apps and devices).
- Open the playlist on your phone that contains your custom local songs.
- Tap the Download button (the down-arrow icon) for that playlist.
Spotify will securely pull the local audio files over your local Wi-Fi network straight to your phone. Once downloaded, you can stream your custom tracks on the go just like any other song!
💡 Troubleshooting Tip: If your mobile device refuses to sync the tracks, double-check that both devices share the same Wi-Fi network, that your desktop Spotify app is left open during the sync process, and that you have an active Spotify Premium subscription.
