The Early Years of Sonia Maino: From a Quiet Italian Village to Cambridge
Long before she became one of the most influential figures in Indian politics as Sonia Gandhi, Sonia Maino grew up far away from the public eye in a modest European household. Her story began on December 9, 1946, in Lusiana, a small village nestled in the pre-Alps of the Veneto region in Italy. Born Edvige Antonia Albina Maino, she was raised in a traditional Roman Catholic family alongside her two sisters by her parents, Stefano and Paola Maino. Her father worked as a building contractor in Orbassano, near Turin, where Sonia spent the majority of her childhood and completed her local schooling.
A Quiet Upbringing and Moving Abroad
As a young girl, Sonia was known for being somewhat reserved and studious. Growing up in post-war Italy, her early ambitions were simple, and she initially dreamed of pursuing paths like becoming a flight attendant. However, her life took a transformative turn when her family decided to send her abroad to broaden her education.
In the mid-1960s, a young Sonia moved to England to study the English language at a language school in Cambridge. Living away from home in an unfamiliar country presented a major cultural and personal leap for someone who had grown up in a tight-knit Italian household.
The Fateful Meeting in Cambridge
While living and studying in Cambridge, Sonia’s path crossed with Rajiv Gandhi, the eldest son of future Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was then studying engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge.
- The Encounter: According to accounts of their early years, the two met at a local university restaurant in 1964 or 1965.
- The Romance: Despite coming from entirely different cultural backgrounds—one from a quiet Italian town and the other from one of India’s most prominent political families—a deep bond formed between them.
After a few years of courtship, the couple married in a traditional ceremony in 1968, leading Sonia to move to India. There, she immersed herself in Indian culture, learned Hindi, and started a family—initially living a private life far removed from the political spotlight that would later define her adult years.
