The Man Behind the Mentor: Was Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer?

When millions of civil service aspirants across India hear the name Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, they picture an exceptional educator, a master orator, and the ultimate guiding light for the Union Public Service Examination (UPSC). Because he is the founder of Drishti IAS—one of the country’s premier coaching institutions—a common question often arises: Was Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer himself?

The short answer is no, he was not an IAS officer. However, his relationship with the civil services is deeply rooted, fascinating, and defined by a bold choice to walk away from a secure government career to pursue a higher calling in education.

Breaking Down the Facts: His Real UPSC Journey

While he did not wear the badge of an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Dr. Divyakirti actually cleared the grueling UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt in 1996, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Because of his rank and service allocation, he was not placed in the IAS cadre. Instead, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). He went on to serve as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

Why Did He Leave Government Service?

For most people, cracking the UPSC exam on the first try and securing a central government post is a lifelong dream fulfilled. But for Dr. Divyakirti, the desk-bound bureaucracy, red tape, and slow pace of change did not align with his inner ambitions.

Driven by a profound love for literature, academics, and teaching, he realized that his true impact lay outside government files. After working briefly in the Ministry, he made the courageous and unconventional choice to resign from his position.

The Birth of Drishti IAS

Stepping away from public service cleared the path for his true legacy. In November 1999, he laid the foundation for Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. Starting with modest resources and a deep focus on leveling the playing field for students—particularly those from Hindi-medium backgrounds—he built an educational empire.

Today, Dr. Divyakirti is celebrated not as a former bureaucrat, but as a legendary mentor who has shaped the careers of thousands of successful civil servants. His journey proves that success isn’t just about holding a prestigious title, but about finding the path where you can make the greatest difference.
